CREEPS + Happy November!

Never a fan of halloween, the final nail in the creepy coffin was hammered in last night in an anticlimactic dribble.

The afternoon was great.. seeing the kids, just out of school w/ their costumes, come in as the first wave of trick or treaters... There was a certain jubilation, however somewhat deliberate, in the air.

One young fairy princess apparently had quite a serious phobia of dogs, and our newest AREA team member, Lenny (lg's dog) induced a severe freakout to the point where she asked her brother to grab her share of the candy and bring out to her.

It seemed as soon as things were picking up it was time to close. When I pulled the gate Smith st. was teeming with superheroes, popstars, fuzzies, wuzzies, and tiny jokers (which gave me the creeps). I began to feel nostalgic for my own kiddie halloweens of yore, and less excited about the approaching "grown-up halloween", which like new year's eve, is usually hyped up to the point of inevitable letdown.

Had a great dinner w/ friends at Bar Toto in park slope (corner of 6th Ave + 11th). Then headed home to greenpoint to "get ready"... I never plan on wearing a costume, but somehow at the last minute I'm scrambling around duct taping chopsticks and cutting paper into a makeshift disguise. I had two rubber bands distorting the shape of my face at one point... disgusting. I ended up just going as my regular awesome self.

Then we went back to park slope to pick up another friend on the way to a ghostly dance party.. but her key was stuck in her outer gate's lock. Tried to get it out and ended up breaking the key in the lock. More time goes by.. I end up fashioning
a wicked costume by cutting eye holes in asymmetrical loose leaf squares and taping them to sunglasses.. I became Shleffty the shleff dealer.

Made it to the party late only to find that the people we were meeting there had already left. So we went to meet someone else at a bar.. Once we got there, that person had already left as well... so we walked down the street to another place. We walked past a group of 4 non-costumed lads on a corner and suddenly I was hit by what felt like an icy snowball; which turned out to be the quintessential halloween projectile: an egg.

In all my years growing up in brooklyn, creeping in the gutters, lurking on the fringe, I have never been egged. Didn't feel like I was a target: in my normal clothes with some stupid sunglasses; i guess it's the randomness of the mayhem that makes it fun for people to throw eggs at other people. It's also relatively harmless physically speaking; lessening the severity of possible consequences. Pretty infuriating though on the receiving end. I wanted to break an arm at least for about a half hour after, and am not at all a violent person by any stretch of the imagination.

I was 3/4 asleep by the time i got home. I think i was ready for sleep after dinner. Next year, I'm sticking with the superheroes, popstars, fuzzies, wuzzies, and tiny jokers (which gave me the creeps).
