real quick before i close angel is right, karma is a b*****! i hope it kicks my bf right in the head and knocks some sense in to him! long story short he is a jerk and i hate him right now! im really upset and this is the only way i can keep from crying right in the middle of the store. he stinks!!! And these flies are really annoying!

Man its Hot Out!

WOW!!! it is super hot out today. I wish i was laying on a beach right now sipping a cold delicious beverage!! I wonder if today was like the hottest July 18th in history? apparently, Greenland Ranch, California, with 134°F on July 10, 1913, holds the record for the highest temperature ever officially recorded in the United States. As far back as the local Weather Bureau records go -- that is to 1871 -- there is no record of a hotter July 18 than today. In fact, only a few times in the history of the bureau did the mercury succeed in climbing to 93 degrees on this date, while yesterday for several hours the temperature was 94 degrees.

FLIES!!!!

For anyone who has stepped foot in the 5th ave store in the past month, you already know about the crazy fly problem. They have pretty much taken over the store and the bathroom is entirely full of them maybe 10 at a time!! Well, while sitting eating my lunch a flat bagel with butter, i became aware of the the six flies crawling on the floor around my feet and began to wonder, what the heck are flies good for anyway? Do they serve any purpose other than to annoy me and bite?

All insects are an integral part of our ecosystems. As part of food chains, insects provide sustenance (dinner) for countless other animals. For instance, just one crow can eat as many as 16 bushels of insects in one year. So--all insects are beneficial and necessary. It's just that with some insects--like flies--it's harder to remember that they are a necessary part of the world around us.

There are more than 100,000 different species of flies. They are found everywhere in the world--even in Antarctica. They belong to the order of insects called Diptera which means "two wings". Most insects have 4 wings. On the bodies of flies, however, over time, this second set of wings developed into small knobs called halteres that are located behind their main wings. These knobs help keep flies steady and balanced when they fly and make them very agile. They can maneuver themselves into intricate flight patterns, they can hover and spin, and they can even fly backwards.

Like all insects, flies have 6 legs and segmented bodies consisting of a head, a thorax and an abdomen.

Flies have hairy, sticky feet and are able to walk upside down. Their special feet enable them to land on smooth surfaces (like your wall) and not slide off.

Flies lay their eggs in soil, on plants, on the bodies of other animals, and frequently on dead or rotting flesh. Fly larvae are usually called maggots.

Different flies dine on different foods. Flies around the world eat nectar, plant sap, blood, other insects, and decaying matter. Did you know that a mosquito is actually a type of fly? Of the species of flies that eat blood, only the females are the blood eaters. They need the nutrients in blood to be able to lay eggs. The males of these species usually dine on nectar from plants and flowers. The species of flies that we call houseflies like to eat OUR food!

So the answer is this: though flies are a necessary part of the food chain they serve no other purpose and are really annoying. And Jeff Goldblum is super hot!

View from the Subway

To follow up on Hunter's blog, there are a few elevated subway lines that offer awesome views not of the bridge but from it. I think this picture was taken from the 7 which I don't have a chance to take too often.
On nice days, when I can, I manipulate my trip so I can take the B or Q which both offer pretty nice views. There's an unexpected contrast that occurs when the subway comes above ground and this dirty ill-lit compartment is suddenly flooded with sunlight. I enjoy it.

The bridge

Today as I walked out of my Manhattan apartment I decided it was to beautiful a morning to be underground, so instead of getting on the subway i decided to take a cab over the Brooklyn Bridge to our Montague street location. I dont usually get that view in the morning I wish I had my camera.

On a lighter note!

Sooo on a lighter note Area Kids stores are officially on sale mode! spring/summer items such as the kids Ink Tees/Rompers, Tea Dresses, Knit Oeuf dresses and Wati skirts are on sale. Very very cute items people! So come one come all and stock up for the rest of the summer and maybe even for next summer.

Decent People.

I am sorry that this blog wont be a happy one but I really need to vent! Before I start i have to say even when I am having the worst day when I come to work at Area I seem to automatically feel a bit better. Maybe it is the decent/nice people who I get to work with or at least speak with while I am here and the happy customers who bring their kids in to shop/hang out. I am always reminded that this place is just drama free and as long as I come here and do my job I don't need to think about all the negativity going on in my life outside of work.


Thank god for the decent people around me because it reminds me that not all people are deceiving/liars and full of evil.

Tired + Awe. A brief review.

I went to the midnight screening of THE DARK KNIGHT last night, and I am exhausted! Not just from the lateness of it all (didn't get home until 3:45) or the length of the movie (I actually prefer 2+ hour movies), but the massive thematic girth of this film is astounding. Rarely does a summer blockbuster operate at such a depth and simultaneously surpass its marketing hype. It's a heavy movie; less mythic feeling than BATMAN BEGINS, but more philosophical on issues of heroism, chaos, and chance.

When the first movie came out, I saw it at midnight, then saw it again the next day. THE DARK KNIGHT is complex, thought-provoking, and merits some digesting. I think this time around, I need to wait a week before a 2nd viewing.
