I MISS MY COUNTRY...

This is Costa Rican "gallo pinto" main dish. (RICE and BEANS)

These birds are always flying around trying to steal your food. They are very friendly. (LAPAS)
This is Jaco Beach, one of the most famous beaches.
Sunset is everyday at 6pm because we are located very close to the Ecuador.(AVELLANAS BEACH).
The water is very clean and warm. (CAHUITA)

Arenal volcano is always like this. It never stops. Very annoying.
I used to live 5 minutes from this waterfall. The name of it is "El ANGEL" and also Poas Volcano is there (the second biggest crater in the world).

My country is beautiful and people are very very friendly. You guys should plan a vacation there. You will love it and it is also very cheap hahaha!
Anyway, back to work at AREA KIDS, lot of things going on here today.

Pirate Ship Deception.

Ursula's blog reminded me of the last time I went to Coney Island. I had every intention of going on the Cyclone but I didn't make it because I was horrifyingly derailed by the Pirate Ship ride. I mean, I knew better than to think it would be as harmless as it looked, I remember it being scary in my early days but I was unprepared for the absolute horror I felt when the pirate ship reached it's pinnacle and swooped back down again. Every time the dreaded ship got ready to go back up I felt like my brains and other insides were in complete turmoil, like the world was being turned upside down and sideways and shot into some alternate dimension of doom. My skirt kept blowing up and to add further to my dismay, the gentleman operating this machine was none other than an evil pirate demon(in full garb)sent up from the depths to terrorize my soul. Or, to warn me perhaps?
Seriously, I got off and had a miniature nervous breakdown down, I couldn't function for like an hour, Afterwards my friend told me she saw a glimpse of what I will be like as an old lady.
Really, she honestly said that.

...just blogging about it made me woozy

Rant(a mini story)

Ugghh. All of the electronics are going Crazy at Montague, thats already stressful. Then in my quest to fix things this awful woman comes in who refuses to watch her son. The child is two-ish cute as a button and running wild. Area Kids must have been his dreamland. Anyway he takes a liking to the Vilac umbrellas. Bang Bang Bang, the poor things are being treated like a hammer. So Instead of having to go through the whole you break it you buy it argument.I said to her I'm sorry, he's not allowed to play with the umbrellas.Well this is a Toy store she hissed. Moments later She wrestling the umbrellas away from him. Once she pried them from his grip he threw himself on the floor and gave the type of tantrum that would have made the terrible twos society proud. After his award winning kicking and screaming she scooped him and started to storm out of the door. But before her exit she spins around and spews her venom at me once more. From me she gets silence. Bang! she slams the door and she and her wailing son were off.

You've just read a chapter from The Area Kids Chronicles stay tuned!

Dear Area

It has been 5 days since the last time I was at work, and what did I do during those 5 days? Well here is a little peek at my first 5 day weekend since March from AREA

Saturday: I went to Six Flags with a few of my friends one who had a phobia of roller coasters, but wanted to get over it, and he did. This is one of the many coasters I rode, and he did not. It is called the Kingda Ka. The Kingda Ka Coaster hits 128 mph (206 km/h) in 3.5 seconds. At the end of the launch track, the train climbs the main top hat tower reaching a height of 456 feet (45 stories)!!! So, that was pretty awesome.

Sunday: Unfortunately due to all the excitement, staying up for 24 hours, and Six Flags nutrition such as oversugared lemonade, ice cream dots (YUM), and popcorn + heat, I felt nauseous the next day and could not come in to work. I will spare you folks the picture of that.

Monday: I went to school, and presented a paper on New Reproductive Technologies. My paper was about emergency contraceptives such as the "day after pill", and the Copper T Intra Uterine Device (IUD). I had to read it out loud, which sucked because I had a personal account in my paper, but I got an A, which made my personal embarrassment totally worth it.

Tuesday: For the first half of my day I was volunteering at AVP, a group which concentrates on helping LGBT victims of domestic violence. The rest of my day (until 9pm) was spent in the darkroom at school developing film, making contact proof sheets, and full prints!!! It sounds easy, but it can actually be a very tedious process.

Wednesday: It was back to school again!!! WooHoo!!! I learned all about the women's movement pertaining to domestic violence, and rape. I Also learned to use filters in my photography class, and received a compliment on my photo, my professor said it was "exquisite", and he doesn't use that word ever.

Today, I was supposed to go to AVP, and the darkroom since I am a bit backed up in terms of the technical assignments, but I was scheduled for the later shift, and did not notice til 12 am today so I could not go :0(.

But at least I am working with MARIE!!!! :0)

Not my size...

So if you follow all my posts, and I know that you do, you'll be sure to remember about my power animal; the giraffe. So of course I had to try on the size 6 purple giraffe hoodie. Tight squeeze.

Very nice and clean.

OK, last week my store was a total disaster.
Today it looks so nice and clean.
Behind the register still a bit messy but its OK. It looks perfect again.
I am so happy to see back my nice and clean store, YEAHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Sale Hysteria

As Jesselyn mentioned, I tackled the sale section today, which on an average day looks like it's been through a hurricane. I mean who can blame 'em, it's hard to stay neat when faced with such bargains. Well, I tried a new organizing method and I'm hoping it'll last a few days at least. Anyone wanna place bets, how long before the next hurricane?

For you Marie...

SAD FACE.
My favorite is the egg too but I couldnt find the pic.

08/08/08...

I CAN'T WAIT...

Yummy Breakfast

I couldn't find photos of 'em but my favorites are the sad ones; the cracked egg and spotty banana are both have single tear drops.

Busy Busy Busy

Hey folks,

5th ave is a buzz with activity! Marie is taking on the dreaded sales section! Boxes are being sent out! Fall stuff is coming in! It's all very exciting and a little bit exhausting. I think I'm going to go home and sleep for a week.

turkeys and pyramids!

Back when I was in college, I didn't know what I'd be doing from day to day, let alone next week or next month, in other words, I never had a clear cut plan of what I'd be up to. Now I find myself filling in calendar dates MONTHS in advance.

I was figuring out Thanksgiving just now!!!! It's on the 27th this year folks, better get ready! The reason I'm looking so far ahead is personal budgeting... for I am trying to plan a big trip somewhere in 2009. I won't say where.. don't want to jinx it. Maybe you can figure it out!

Anybody watch "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"? google it.

In later this week:
Big Plan Toys shipment!
(I love Plan Toys boxes. They are box perfection in my humble opinion. Toysmith boxes are less than ideal.)

My Horible and Craptasic last 24 hours. by Nadya

Well as you can tell by my blog title my last 24 hours have been horrible and craptastic. Here a list of the low-lights (in no particualar order)...

1)I just realized that tomorrow is my mother's birthday, and I have no clue what to get her.

2) My wallet was stolen yesterday at the Williamsburg store. If you happen to see any hipsters with area kids bags and a bright red wallet with my picture in it, grab them!

3) It's hot.

On the bright side, the wonderful, talented, super-excellent Marie fixed the speakers over here at Court street. Three cheers for Marie! (Which I can now hear. Through my speakers.)

I Am A Bugaboo Master

Today I put together my very first Bugaboo Bee! Thank you, thank you, your applause is overwhelming. No, please stop, I have to get back to work.

I was a bit intimidated by the idea of this project - in the past Ursula has always been around to guide me through the treacherous waters of bugaboo land - but it was actually surprisingly easy. SO easy, in fact, that I had it completely done in 10 minutes. The secret? You don't actually have to put Bugaboos together when you buy them. That's right, they come already pre-assembled and folded very neatly in the box. All you have to do is open them up, snap on the front wheels and go. Mine took a bit longer than that because the customer wanted the seat to be facing the opposite direction, but bugaboos are so magnificently simple to adjust that I had that done in 2 minutes flat. The rest of the time was spent chatting away with the (very satisfied) customer.

The Bugaboo

And Me

(Sort of)

Jeff was at 7ave AGAIN...

This time he showed up in an airplane.
He double parked (stopped all the traffic of 7ave) then he unloaded the plane and put all boxes inside my store.
No pics of my store full of boxes this time because it was so packed that I couldn't even move.
Hahahahaha....

"Pretty Ugly" Philosophy

Have you ever taken a moment to read some of the personality descriptions that come along with the ugly dolls? They are one of the best things about them. I don't trust you guys to go and read them yourselves so I'm going to put up a really good example;
"Uglyworms want power.
The Power to do great and wonderful things.
They want your power.
You know that thing you do?
Uglyworms want to do that.
And you know those things you think you can't do?
Uglyworms know you CAN do those things
They think you're bluffing
Oh what power!"

Um, amazingly insightful.

" Some uglyworms are sneaky.
Some are crafty. all are hungry...
For knowledge...
Like where do you keep the
carrot cake? How long
before Ice-Cream goes bad?
Knowledge is power"

Thank you uglyworm.

Vietnamese Coffee.

Yeesh! Yowsa! Kablam! If you are looking for an extreme caffeine/sugar rush to help you get all the cute new fall stuff priced and out on the floor, get a vietnamese coffee (iced or hot). They are sooooooo very extra sweet.
I had no idea it would be like this. Look at all the sweetened condensed milk they put in there.

Please check this website out...

It is good for everybody.
Please check it out. It has amazing ideas for all of us to save some money.

long time no blog!

hello friends!

I have to formally apologize for my lack of blogging as of late, but I'm back (and better than ever). I have been doing all kinds of silly things when not working at AREA! warning-this blog is going to be VERY self-involved...

I am going to be on tv! haha! I will be on WE tv's show "Cinematherapy" on august 14th. (that date might be wrong, ill keep everyone posted) Its a show where women get interviewed by this hillarious guy named Chuck Nice, on inflatable furniture! He asks movie related questions, comparing them to events in your life. Overall a super fun experience.

My other big news is that I moved on Sunday! I'm back in Park Slope (7th avenue and 15th street) so that has been a little crazy.

OH OH I'll be DJ-ing a party in Greenpoint on August 9th, if anyone is interested in attending let me know and ill give you the info.

And in actual AREA related news, I was looking through the Jane Jenni personality pins, and found one that said "dollface"! I had never seen this one before, so i snatched it up. My new favorite I think. I also love the stud muffin one!! I always find ones that match my friends' personalitites perfectly, and hand them out. Everyone loves them!!!

what is is about her?

It seems like a day doesn't go by that we don't sell a Sophie. Maybe it's her smile!

AREA Kids is in the most expensive city of the USA.

This was today in the Yahoo Front Page.

America's Most Expensive Cities

By Lauren Sherman, Forbes.com

Jul 24th, 2008

New York City's got fashionable Fifth Avenue, trendy Tribeca and an oasis in Central Park. To enjoy those perks, residents pay up.

The Big Apple topped a new list of America's most expensive cities, with a measured cost of living surpassing that of Houston, Boston and Washington, D.C. The culprit? High rent: $4,500 a month on average for a two-bedroom, unfurnished luxury apartment.

Los Angeles comes in second place. Its residents can partly blame a long, expensive commute. The average driver there spends 72 hours a year stuck in traffic delays, and, as of July 21, the cost of a gallon of regular gas was $4.46.

In Pictures: America’s Most Expensive Cities

Behind The Numbers

To determine the U.S. cities where the cost of living is highest, the London office of Mercer, an American human resources consulting company, measured the prices of the same basket of goods in 253 of the world's cities. The basket is composed of over 200 products, representative of executive spending patterns and including everything from rent for a luxury apartment to the cost of a fast-food hamburger.

Location has a lot to do with why New York and Los Angeles top the list.

In New York, the need for more homes has been increasing since the mid-1970s, says Edward Glaeser, an economist at Harvard University.

"Before 1970," he says, "workers in some sense were paid a premium to live in New York." This, says Glaeser, was due to its reputation for crime and dirtiness. "Now, people pay a premium to live there."

The change happened when the city began to experience robust economic growth that's still occurring, despite some hiccups along the way. Even though business is increasingly global, New York is a center for industries that produce ideas, like finance and publishing, notes Glaeser.

"You don't see anyone relocating to South Dakota," he says. "The idea now is that you become smart by hanging around other smart people, which New York has in abundance. That's why it's been able to thrive."

L.A.--another idea factory, though focused on the entertainment industry--remains expensive in part because of people's desire to live in the city's warm, Mediterranean climate.

However, the amount of money it costs to reside in New York or L.A. is chump change compared to many cities abroad. Out of 253 major metropolises around the world surveyed, New York ranked 22, seven places lower than in 2007. In fact, it was the only American city to break the top 50. Los Angeles placed 55th overall, also seven places lower than last year.

The reason U.S. cities have fallen in the rankings is simple: The dollar is weak.

"The dollar has been declining steadily in the past several years, which has resulted in an overall decrease in the cost of living in 19 U.S. cities," said Mitch Barnes, a principal at Mercer in the U.S., in a note attached to the report.

For example, in terms of expenses, Washington, D.C., only ranks a little above average compared with the 252 other major cities around the world. But in the U.S., it's the 10th most expensive city to live in. Those prices have a lot to do with the high inflation. However, if you're looking for a good job to pay those bills, there's a decent chance you'll find one in the capital. It ranks No. 6 on our list of the best cities for young professionals.

And despite the dismal real estate market, Miami is still a pricey spot, mostly due to its vibrant nightlife, tourism and large consortium of creative professionals. But the city dropped significantly in the ranks since 2007--24 places, from No. 51 to No. 75 out of 253 cities worldwide. Want to take advantage of the decrease in prices? Try renting instead of buying.

Yet all is not lost for the economically disadvantaged. In New York, for example, there are hidden deals throughout the city.

"One can find some of the most expensive and most inexpensive things in New York," says economist Dr. Arnold Kling, writer of Econlog, an economics blog from the Library of Economics and Liberty funded by Liberty Fund, Inc., a private, educational foundation based in Indianapolis. "It has one of the more unequal income distributions around, which means there's demand at both ends of the spectrum."

The new Appaman prints make me want to go on a safari

Playlist.Com

The most excellent thing to happen to internet music listening since Pandora - introducing, Playlist.Com! Now, I know we all know and love Pandora - it has great music and interesting information about all of my favorite artists. It also introduces me to new music that's similar to the stuff I already like. But there are times when I really want to hear one specific song, not five songs that sound sort of like the one I want. For legal reasons Pandora is unable to let me hear Baby Got Back when I type in "Baby Got Back" - I have to hope that it comes up eventually after a whole lot of bad lite rap. Welcome to Playlist.Com, a place where I can get my fill of Sir Mix Alot exactly when and exactly how I want it (that sentence came out a lot dirtier than I'd intended, I swear!). Check it out, right now!
