We have a pretty decent rubber band ball here at 5th. I'm not sure how ours was started but I think the secret is usually paper clips. They're at the core and then you just build up from there.
Apparently though this guy doesn't need secrets, The one pictured is the largest one ever, weighs 3500 pounds and is entirely rubber banded!!!
